When Angela turns up in a remote Spanish mountain village, she is so tall, thin, and pale that everyone thinks she is a ghost, fairy, or the dreadful mantequero that comes in the night and sucks the fat from your bones.
But Domingo knows better. "Soy Angela," she said to him when they met - "I am an angel." Only later did he realize that she was telling him her name, and by then it was too late, and everyone knew her as Domingo's Angel.
This is the story of their love affair. But it is also the story of the people of the tiny mountain village the indomitable Rosalba, a shopkeeper, doctor, midwife, and wise woman who makes it her business to know everything that goes on in the village; Guillermo, the mayor, whose delusions of grandeur are rooted in his impoverished childhood; and Salva, the baker who risked his life and liberty to give bread to the starving children.
The events in this story are based on the real experiences of the people of the White Villages in Southern Spain and their struggle to keep their communities alive through the years of war and the oppression of Franco's rule.

A survey of fiction readers showed that the one most important aspect of a novel to readers was what they learned. Domingo's Angel fills the bill perfectly. The reader learns about conditions in Spain through the lives of villagers in the mountains. The story is beautiful, heartbreaking, and haunting. The characters, depicted so vividly, stay with the reader long after the book is done. This is one I will read and reread. Do pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.Product details

Domingo Angel (Audible Audio Edition) Jenny Twist Gary Furlong Jennifer Margaret Twist Books Reviews
Domingo's Angel by Jenny Twist
Angela turns up in a remote Mountain village in Spain. Tall, thin and pale, people are talking about her. But not Domingo. When he asks her name she says "Soy Angela" meaning I am an Angel. And that she becomes to Domingo. As their relationship blooms the town people refer to her as "Domingo's Angel."
We also learn about some of the town people. Rosalba a shopkeeper, doctor, midwife and wise woman. Guillermo the mayor who is haunted by his childhood impoverishment. And Salva the Baker who risked his life and freedom to give food to starving children.
A well written story of love, life and hardships overcome. Based on (some) true facts of the (Spanish) War and oppression. Also some of the characters are based on real people as well. Not just an ordinary love story, but one filled with many emotions. I have to admit I truly liked every character. That is rare in a book. The setting in Spain and the (unknown) facts added more depth and heart-felt emotions. Domingo's Angel will stay with me for a long time. I highly recommend to book lovers of all genres.
*I received this book as a gift
The story occurs in a small picturesque mountain village in the south of Spain during and after the Spanish Civil War. Angela, a young English woman on the run, came to the top of a ridge near the village. Below the heights she meets Domingo, a poor goat herder. His first sight of her caused him to think she was an angel, helped by his misunderstanding when she told him her name. An attraction soon develops between them that eventually turned to love despite their different backgrounds.
The characters will draw you deeper and deeper into this story. Not just Angela and Domingo but the other characters that populate the village; such as, Rosalba; but I shall leave you to discover her for yourself. In addition to the people, you will discover and be charmed by the gentle magic and enchanting secrets of the village that Jenny has captured so well.
I am sure you won't want to put it down once you begin to read, because you'll have a need to learn what happens to Angela and her new friends and neighbors. It is a wonderful read and it was so well written that I urge you to do yourself a favor and get a copy of this heartwarming tale.
When I started to read "Domingo's Angel," it seemed to me to be a sweet, gently funny story. A young Englishwoman has decided impulsively to buy a house in a mountain village in Spain and to live there on her own, despite the fact that she can barely speak Spanish, among people who think she's so strange that she might be not quite human. Just as impulsively, she takes a handsome young stranger to bed, and he moves in with her. They adopt an orange cat. The time is not long after the end of World War II. The tone is lighthearted and humorous, with the unsophisticated villagers scratching their heads over Angela's odd ways of acting and speaking but cheerfully accepting her presence, and cheerful Angela – just as ignorant about their ways as they are about hers – enjoying herself and learning to know them.
There are hints of darkness in the first few chapters, shadows that Angela sees but doesn't understand and mostly ignores. Amused by the quirkiness of the village and lulled by the faintly dreamlike quality of the story, which moves quickly and smoothly, I ignored them too. I was well into the novel, so much so that I couldn't have put it down if I'd wanted to, before I realized I was seeing a miniature and horrifying picture of Franco's Spain and the cruelty and anguish imposed by a devastating civil war upon people who had and have no choice but to go on, living and trying to live, as best they can. And remembering.
Not that I wanted to put the book down. Jenny Twist is a clever, skilled, and subtle writer, and she's at the top of her form here. One of the most amazing things about "Domingo's Angel" is that in spite of the heartbreak of the tale she's telling, at the same time it remains sweet and gently funny. A real love story. Highly recommended!
This is an OK summer read when you don't need to think much.
Jenny writes a beautiful, moving, historical romance story using multiple POV's allowing you to get to know these characters. The descriptions are written so well, you vividly see them in your mind. I would love to see this made into a movie. Jenny had me smiling, gasping, tearing and satisfied when I came to the end.
